Kiez Hören Moabit (Hearing the Kiez of Moabit) is a long-term research project in collaboration with sound-artists Guillermo Lares and Klaus Hamlescher, with an aim to describe and archive transformation of district Moabit using the sound as primary media. By introducing sound-cartography, sound-walks and sound-performances, Moabit City Garden has been turn into the hearing station with diverse audience, spatial characteristics and climate conditions.

3 main events showed multilayered sound condition of this particular space at the border of calm Kiez and heavy industry.

30.08.2013

Collective Mapping Walk  (part of B_Tour Festival)  tried to re-communicate tour as artistic strategy and involve participants into collective analysis of the location characteristics.

13.09.2013 

Second walk focused on multi-scalar characteristic of sound, sound-panoramas and sound-section of the location.

20.09.2013 

Finally, performative potential of the sound explorations has been presented by giving audience props to ‘design’ their own soundscapes.

LOCAL MAPPING_Urban Prothesis_by Miryana Todorova

Saturday, June 8th, Temporary Installation/ Performative Actions

The project ‘Movable Architecture’ by Miryana Todorova lands at ZK/U and adapts as a parasite structure to the K67_Urban Router. The bond between the two types of temporary structures generates an unstable lapse of time, like a Utopian Experiment in Flight. Visitors to the site are given the possibility to play with the structures, connect to them with extra bondages and belts, become part of them, wear and fully operate them as a mapping vehicle in search for transformation.

LOCAL MAPPING_Moabit Citygarden_Mapping MPA-B 2013

In attempt to create ‘deep map’ of Moabiter Stadtgarten, we have a chance to map ephemeral present of 7 looped performances during the Month of Performance Art 2013.

Curated by Atelier Obra Viva, this collective appropriation of the public park (and to a certain extent ZKU building) produced many unexpected interactions and erased the line between spectator and performer.

Mapping process focused on two socio-spatial relations of the artist and park; initially as a site-responsive interpretation of existing ‘over-designed’ space and finally as a part of collective-body (that includes audience) during the group slow-walks.

LOCAL MAPPING_Moabitours_(re)discovering local knowledge

Structural change in Moabit, with strong shift in micro-economic dynamics, left many ground-floor shops either vacant or in the danger of expulsion. This situation is rapidly changing ‘street-culture’ of the district, bringing into life sterile shopping possibilities, less interaction between citizens and further social fragmentations. On the other hand, local shops with particular knowledge forms and non-commercial purpose have difficulties to justify their presence in competitive (real-estate driven) situation.

Together with our friends from Stadtgeschichten, we are trying to develop communication strategies in order to introduce new forms of ‘local proud’. Once famous entrepreneurial district of Moabit , where innovation has long tradition, could re-discover its cultural identity based on industrial heritage and citizen’s diversity.

We are planning didactic-tours based on exchange of ideas, skills and cultural objects. Stay tuned !

 

LOCAL MAPPING_ZKU park soundscapes_session 1

Continuing with the Local Mapping format with our friends Guille and Klaus from Sound Studies (UDK), we will explore the soundscapes of the public park around ZKU, going beyond traditional cartography and searching for hidden layers of our deep-map.

In the first session we tried to locate prevailing sounds from outside of the park that create strong feeling of periphery (Port crane, Railway, Industrial sounds, etc.), recording them both at the park and at the source. By doing so, specific points of ‘sounds-interaction’ have been discovered at the park and some physically distanced sound has been considered as integrative part of the local soundscape.

Second part of the soundscapes-mapping was devoted to the spatial characteristics of the kiosk-cloud by catching ambient sounds at specific spots (this time with 4 microphones /360°), but also repeating two very different sounds (trumpet/wooden sticks).

Final sound-maps has been thematically grouped as: sounds made by nature itself, machine-like sounds produced by people (local), machine-like sounds from unknown source/direction and sounds made by people itself (inside the cloud).

Two main cloud-sections has been also mapped and presented as rhythmic sequences, giving possibility for a short sound-journey.

LOCAL MAPPING_soundscapes of the kiosk-cloud_session 3

Invisible features of our kiosk-cloud have been analyzed through observations of the soundscape.

We hosted Guillermo Lares, sound designer and researcher at the Sound Studies (UDK, Berlin), who showed us at first ‘how to listen’, but also how to deconstruct complex noise using the spatial qualities of the given spot. After introduction we did sort of section through location, measuring sounds embedded in particular spatial situations (barriers, doubling, material reflections, nature itself, etc.). Moving in-between marked spots also showed transition characteristics such as fading out/in or micro-sounds.

Results will be presented in the form of advanced audio-guide and put soon at our offline-server accessible only on site.

Next soundscapes-session is scheduled for 2nd of October (2pm) when we are going to produce and repeat sounds through diverse spatial conditions in order to measure resonance of the kiosk-cloud.

LOCAL MAPPING_Topography of Typography_session 2

Mapping diversity of typography inside the Kiosk-cloud brought unpredictable outcomes.

First of all, it is almost impossible to catch all typo-styles, even in such a small geographical area. Secondly, by creating different categories (Adds, Corporative logos, Tags, Graffiti, etc.) we noticed certain accumulations and factors beside. Lastly, we developed quite interesting game in which participants have to create haiku-poetry (out of collected words) and place it on the map tracing the word order.

LOCAL MAPPING_Making-Visible the Kiosk-Cloud_session 1

Our new format, in which people collectively map invisible features of the Kiosk-Cloud, has started with basic measurements of the cloud topography.

With different mobile devices and colourful chalks we managed to get outline of the future observation area, marking it also in the public sphere.

In the following weeks this will be the local area for advanced micro-cartography, with an aim to produce so-called ‘‘deep-map’’, accumulation of diverse category-based maps, hidden features and bizarre figures.
