Kiez Hören Moabit

Aug-Sep 2013, Moabit City Garden

Kiez Hören Moabit (Hearing the Kiez of Moabit) is a long-term research project in collaboration with sound-artists Guillermo Lares and Klaus Hamlescher, with an aim to describe and archive transformation of district Moabit using the sound as primary media. By introducing sound-cartography, sound-walks and sound-performances, Moabit City Garden has been turn into the hearing station with diverse audience, spatial characteristics and climate conditions.

3 main events showed multilayered sound condition of this particular space at the border of calm Kiez and heavy industry.

Exhibition ‘People’s (Re)public’_by Cleaner Art Space

July 25th – August 30th, photo/postcards exhibition by Cleaner Art Space (Gallery on Critical Urbanism)

Summer, Sun, Holidays…What about sending some postcards? Our guests from Shanghai present serial of ‘critical postcards’, catching particular moments of urban informalities in the contemporary Chinese urban development.

‘People’s (Re)public’ focus at the specific urban condition of ‘appropriation’. It often balances in between the formal and informal but is not limited to this. The topic investigates people’s appropriation of space to a use not intended by its preliminary design or planning.

The exhibition questions the modern ‘planned city’ in regard of who is actually animating urban space. Is it architects, planners, lawmakers, investors, or the inhabitants and users them selves? A number of examples show the city from a use occurring by its inhabitants. A use that from a design point was likely not planned.

Focus is on people’s own appropriations of spaces and public facilities around them that due to shortcomings, or simply because another use than intended is more popular or necessary, have made use for alternate activities.

LOCAL MAPPING_Urban Prothesis_by Miryana Todorova

Saturday, June 8th, Temporary Installation/ Performative Actions

The project ‘Movable Architecture’ by Miryana Todorova lands at ZK/U and adapts as a parasite structure to the K67_Urban Router. The bond between the two types of temporary structures generates an unstable lapse of time, like a Utopian Experiment in Flight. Visitors to the site are given the possibility to play with the structures, connect to them with extra bondages and belts, become part of them, wear and fully operate them as a mapping vehicle in search for transformation.

Made in Omnitopia_Meaningful interaction without words

Last week we hosted performance Made in Omnitopia, work of Paula Marie Hildebrandt and Natalie Fari.

The concept of Omnitopia, originally coined by American scholar Andrew Wood, provided a theoretical starting point and practical framework for the performance project Made In Omnitopia-Berlin 2013, serious of performative interactions without words.

After testing their concept inside Fitness Centre, Mall and Wireless bubble, two artists decided to incorporate Kiosk-situation into series of performances to document the process through which places become Omnitopia.

LOCAL MAPPING_Moabit Citygarden_Mapping MPA-B 2013

In attempt to create ‘deep map’ of Moabiter Stadtgarten, we have a chance to map ephemeral present of 7 looped performances during the Month of Performance Art 2013.

Curated by Atelier Obra Viva, this collective appropriation of the public park (and to a certain extent ZKU building) produced many unexpected interactions and erased the line between spectator and performer.

Mapping process focused on two socio-spatial relations of the artist and park; initially as a site-responsive interpretation of existing ‘over-designed’ space and finally as a part of collective-body (that includes audience) during the group slow-walks.

Wärmehalle_session 1_Hosting Grenzen-Los! initiative

Our first format at ZK/U location Wärmehalle (Heated-Hall), imagined as a series of dialogues and interviews inside the warmed kiosk, hosted local initiative Grenzen-Los! , organization dedicated to political education of youth through theatrical expression.

Wärmehalle is reference to historically relevant but almost forgotten cultural phenomenon of shared heated spaces. At the beginning of 20th century, facing rather poor housing conditions and significant amount of homeless people, Berlin authorities decided to provide collective spaces in which anybody can hang-out with the cup of coffee and newspapers (of course for free). More than just solidarity act and social space for many citizens in the winter time, Wärmehalle became place of micro-exchanges and social interaction.

With the central question What is the Wärmehalle of today? we will host local initiatives, social entrepreneurs and heroes from Moabit in order to discuss modalities of social cohesion, novel knowledge-exchange formats and current social turbulence caused by real-estate pressure.

After chat with the Grenzen-Los ! we decided to make together a theatre-piece that is going to be performed around the kiosk this summer.
